Training trainers with Jordan Media Institute

For the first time, AFP Foundation and the new Jordan Media Institute (JMI) cooperated in delivering a Training of Journalism Trainers course in April 2008.

Twelve mid-career journalists selected by JMI and by Jordan’s Higher Media Council (HMC) took part in the five-day course, designed to hone the skills of Arabic-speaking media trainers by bringing them up to date with modern teaching methods.

Training took place at the SAE Institute in Amman, the world’s largest media arts college, which also provided state-of-the-art equipment for a day devoted to technological instruction.

Jordan Media Institute is an initiative of HRH Princess Rym Ali, who said it “aims to set new professional standards in journalism education in the region”.

Each day of training was divided into three: a theoretical session in which participants were made familiar with new techniques; a practical session where they applied what they had learned; and an analytical discussion.

One of the trainees, quoted by the daily Ad Dustour, said "the training was characterized by non-traditional methods because there were no books and papers" and added that it was "exceptionally innovative and effective in the delivery of information to the participants."

The AFP Foundation is preparing further training with JMI in July.
