Peter Mackler has been a journalist for 33 years, starting with UPI and the Associated Press before joining Agence France-Presse in 1979. He has served as AFP's chief editor in Asia and North America, desk chief in Paris, director for Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, senior correspondent for Europe, senior international correspondent, senior US foreign affairs correspondent, and Iraq war coordinator. He authored two stylebooks for the agency, piloted its first regional desk and helped develop its first multimedia products.

Among the stories Mackler has covered are both wars in the Gulf, the conflicts in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, the Palestinian intifada, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and presidential elections from the United States to the Philippines. He is currently in Washington, directing AFP's editorial operations in the United States and Canada.

Mackler has been active in media training for a decade and a half. He has trained journalists in Iran, Malaysia, Cyprus, the United States and other countries, and conducted communications workshops for the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He has spoken before numerous groups, including the Ecole de Guerre in Paris, NATO and the Barcelona Forum.
